Darker than Black: Kuro no Keiyakusha

Darker than Black: Kuro no Keiyakusha

Darker than Black: Kuro no Keiyakusha

Synopsis

In Tokyo, an impenetrable field known as "Hell's Gate" appeared ten years ago. At the same time, psychics who wield paranormal powers at the cost of their conscience also emerged. Hei is one of the most powerful of these psychic agents, and along with his blind associate, Yin, works for one of the many rival agencies vying to unlock the mysteries of Hell's Gate.

Main Character

Hei

Hei (黒(ヘイ))
His codename is Hei, which means black in Chinese. Hei is a very talented contractor, his Messier Code is BK-201. Hei lives two lives in the series. In public he is Li Shengshun, a foreign exchange student from China. He is very nice and well mannered. He lives in the Umitsuki apartments and is always working a new part-time job. He has a huge appetite and eats a lot, but never gets bigger.

Hei's other life is of a Contractor called BK-201 and also the Black Reaper, mostly by other Contractors. Before becoming a contractor Hei was an assassin which earned him his nickname. Hei is usually seen in a mask, that usually breaks, and a dark cloak that is bullet proof.

Hei has the ability to use electricity. His electricity goes through everything except air and concrete. He can kill anyone he wants, and short out power in large buildings. Hei can also disturb matter on a quantum level that can produce electricity. His weapon he most likely always uses is his knife on a metal, flexible wire. He usually wraps the wire around necks and arms, and electrocutes anyone he pleases. He is also seen putting his hand on a person's head and electrocuting them that way.

Contractors are said not to have emotions, but Hei seems to have them. He seems heartless at points, but Hei does have a heart. And that is proven by how much he loves his sister he lost when the South American Gate imploded. He's been looking for her ever since. It is said that Hei has very strong feelings toward Yin. Somewhat of love. Even though she is a doll. Hei feels torn between a Contractor and a human. He has strong hatred for Amber/February, a member of the Primrose and a Syndicate co-worker. Amber betrayed Hei when they lived in South America.

Hei also seems to care about Mao, his partner and friend. But the relationship is unknown.

Yin

Yin (銀)
A member of Hei's team and an emotionless spirit medium known as a "doll".

Her power lies in tracking and observation by way of water. However, this power only takes effect when she is in direct contact with water. Huang mentions that her "program" is a minimal one, incapable of showing emotion or even allowing her to make decisions for herself, though, she later debunks this by making the decision to keep working with Hei and the others when given the choice of leaving.

Judging from what we see of her past, Yin seems to have bad eyesight or is nearly blind, since she can't seem to know when the moon was full or if her teacher found his dropped pen in episode 13/14, but as if to contradict this there are times when Yin sees more than she seems to.

Little, if anything, is known about her transformation into the medium known as a "doll", but it seems to revolve around her personal tragedy. It is implied that she has feelings for Hei, when Amber compared that they were both similar in that aspect and asked her to take care of him.

Throughout the course of the series, Yin begins to display emotions and her own will, deciding to follow Hei and remain to be his partner, and even observes and notices a change in his behavior, despite not being ordered to do so. This has been made apparent when she called Hei from the void to come back to her and not leave her alone. In the process, her observation apparition evolved or upgraded, now having a human-like body shaped with her silhouette and is capable of physical touch.

Episode two of Gaiden reveals that "Izanami" possessed Yin during the events of episode twenty-five which explains how she attained the abilities.

Huang
Huang (黄(ホァン))
Huang's position can be interpreted as that of field supervisor. He is a human and only possesses strategic abilities. He has a general dislike for contractors and voices it regularly in spite of having to work alongside three of them. Huang passes down orders from the Syndicate to the rest of the team.

Huang was going to run away with a girl he loved who was also a contractor, but she was killed saving Huang from being targeted by the syndicate.

Mao
Mao (猫(マオ))
A Contractor who has lost his original body and now resides within that of a black cat. His messier code is HM-432. His brain is directly connected to a wireless network which enables him to send and receive information at any time, as well as subduing the natural instincts of the animals he possesses. Mao usually creates diversions for Hei in battle. Mao's ability is to possess the bodies of other animals. While he lost his remuneration along with his body, he must connect periodically with the wireless network or run the risk of having the animal's natural instincts take over.
Near the end of the series, his wireless connection is cut off, eliminating his human consciousness and resulting in his 'death.' However, he had a backup network under the control of an unknown organization and he manages to reunite with Hei. It is likely that "Mao" is his codename; like Hei, his real name was never stated. He is also in hiding with Hei, residing in the body of Suou's pet squirrel Petya.

Mao hates the Spring season as most cats would find a partner and try to breed kittens.

Amber
Amber (アンバー)
The first confirmed Contractor, with her star's Messier code UB-001. She was originally a spy for MI6 with the codename February but later defected and joined the Syndicate, adopting "Amber" as her new name. She worked together with Hei and Bai in South America during the "Heaven's War", and founded and leader of her own organization, the Evening Primrose at that time. She went missing together with Bai and millions of other people when the Heaven's Gate disappeared, only to reappear later to fight the Syndicate with the rest of the strenghtened Evening Primrose.
Amber's ability is chronal manipulation, which includes temporal freezing of time and rewinding of events to an unknown degree. Elaborate usage of her power enables her to gain knowledge of future events, and then respond to them accordingly. Once time has been frozen around her, she can also pull other people out of the frozen time stream, while those still under her ability's effect will no longer detect her presence or movement. Her remuneration is aging backwards, making her appear frequently younger. Amber loves Hei, in spite of him believing her to be a traitor, and has stated that she has only seen him truly smile once and she would do anything to see that smile again. Amber's feelings for Hei often result in her making decisions that compromise the mission objectives of the Evening Primrose and at times she goes as far as to order her subordinates to avoid fighting Hei.

Misaki Kirihara
Misaki Kirihara (霧原未咲)
The Section-Chief of the Foreign Affairs Section 4 who is investigating matters that concern Contractors. Misaki has long brown hair and glasses and rarely smiles or laughs. She has a strong sense of justice and a sharp intuition. Kirihara became a policewoman in order to protect the weak, has a distaste for smokers due to their smell, and is sensitive about the exposure of her body. She likes eating greasy food but claims to stay fit due to constantly moving around everyday as part of her job. Her father is Superintendent Supervisor Naoyasu Kirihara of the National Police Agency.

It is hinted that she may have romantic feelings for Li Shun Sheng(Hei).
It was later revealed in the later part of special episode 26, that Hei's identity was revealed to her accidentally in a situation. In that particular episode, her subordinate,Yusuke Saito, has feelings for her and confessed it accidentally during a situation. Their memories of that incident however, was erased due to a however soon after verbalizing them his memory along with Kirihara's is erased due to a memory erasing substance accidentally released by Mao.

Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica

Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica

Synopsis

Beloved family, good friends, laughter and tears - these things make up the ordinary life of Kaname Madoka, a second year student of Mitakihara City Middle School. One night, Madoka dreams of a mysterious dark haired girl struggling against a terrible evil; the next morning she discovers that the girl, Akemi Homura, has transferred into her class. This encounter will lead to an incident which will alter Madoka's fate forever.

Main Character

Kyuubey

Kyuubey (キュゥべぇ)
His name is written in both Hiragana and Katakana as キュ(kyu)ゥ(u)べ(be)え(e). So the more acceptable Romaji for his name is Kyuubee/Kyuubey.

A familiar who can grant any wish to a certain girl, on the condition that she become a Puella Magi and fight against witches.

When someone makes a contract with him, he extracts their soul and places it inside a Soul Gem, replacing their body with a shell that's more resilient to fighting witches.

He has so far made contracts with Mami, Kyoko, Homura and Sayaka, and shows particular interest in making Madoka a magical girl.

It is yet to be revealed if there are other familiars besides him. As a magical creature, he can only be seen or heard by Puella Magi and those with magical potential. He is shown to consume used Grief Seeds, though for what reason is unknown. His true motives are unknown, and he constantly tries to find chances to persuade girls with magical potential to form a contract with him despite knowing the dangers that a Puella Magi faces.

He tends to have little understanding of human values, but gives a great question about how there are little difference between himself and humans. Slaughter Houses, for example show our little interest and sympathy for other creature's values. He is nor evil nor good, but a survivor just like anyone else.

Major Spoiler
His real name is 'Incubator' and he is from outside of the earth. There seem to be a lot of duplicates of himself, and when one dies, another one comes and devours its corpse.

The major motive of his magical girl recruiting was actually, in order to eventually have them turn them into witches and collect grief seeds with a huge amount of energy that balances out the entropy of the universe. This energy is created by emotions, which Kyuubey's species does not have. However, it isn't revealed whether this is the sole intention that Kyuubey has.

Homura Akemi
Homura Akemi (暁美 ほむら)
Age: 14 Years

A magical girl who transfers into Madoka's school. She seems to know Madoka well and wishes to prevent Madoka from becoming a magical girl. She tries to attack Kyubey in the first episode, only to be stopped by Mami.

Homura is from the future, and she has redone the current time line many times in order to stop Madoka from becoming a magical girl. Before the time loops, Homura was a shy and fragile girl. During the first fight with the Walpurgis Night, Madoka is killed, so Homura makes a wish to "re-do" her meeting with Madoka, and thus becomes a Mahou Shoujo. Her time manipulation abilities stem from her wish, so she travels back to the day before she met Madoka.

Before the time loop Homura was a shy and fragile girl while Madoka was cheerful and self-confident. During the fight against the Walpurgis Night Madoka was killed, due to this Homura makes a wish to Kyuubey to 'redo' her meeting with Madoka and thus becomes a Mahou Shoujo as a result of this. This wish gave her the power to manipulate time and so she went back to the day before she met Madoka.

In the first loop, in addition to her ability to stop time, Homura learns to make her own weapons (i.e. bombs) and, using her time manipulation abilities, steals firearms. However, she was unable to save Madoka, as she transformed into a witch after defeating the Walpurgis Night.

In the second loop she tells everyone about the secret of the contract, the fact that it is the fate of a mahou shoujo to eventually turn into a witch themselves. This happens when their grief seeds accumulate too much taint. However, no one believed her until Sayaka turned into a witch herself and had to be killed by Homura. The shock brought on by this truth sends Mami over the edge and, during her bout of insanity, she shoots and subsequently destroy Kyoko's Soul Gem, killing her in the process. She attempts to kill Homura as well but is thwarted when Madoka destroys Mami's soul gem with her bow. Homura and Madoka fight together to destroy the Walpurgis Night, however the strains of the battle lead to their seeds becoming overwhelmed with taint. They joke about how they'll become witches together and destroy the world, however Madoka has one grief seed left and uses it to save Homura so that she could, again, go to the past and save everyone.

She repeats the loop many times, and in the last loop, Homura prevents the meeting between Madoka and Kyuubey right up until the end when Homura fights the Walpurgis Night, however Homura fails to destroy it and is defeated. In seeing this, Madoka makes a wish with Kyuubey and becomes a mahou shoujo, and then proceeds to defeat the Walpurgis Night with a single shot. After this, she becomes the strongest witch to have ever existed, which would lead to the destruction of the world in a mere 10 days. Homura refuses to intervene in the next battle, and restarts time again to arrive at the (apparently) current timeline, where she begins her battle to protect Madoka anew. Kyubey realizes that Homura is the reason why Madoka has so much magical potential (all the loops were to save her, thus making her even more magically gifted).

Madoka Kaname
Madoka Kaname (鹿目 まどか)
Born: October 3
Age: 14
Height: Less than 150cm (4'11")
Blood Type: A
Shoe size: 22cm

A 14-year-old girl whose life changes when she encounters the Puella Magi Homura and the familiar Kyubey, who offers to transform her into a Puella Magi herself. She sees herself as a person without special qualities or talents, and after seeing Mami fighting against witches, wants to be a wonderful and cool Puella Magi like her. She is a rather selfless girl who wishes to be a magical girl simply so that she can help others. She allegedly has a large amount of magical potential within her.

Following Mami's death, she becomes uncertain about becoming a Puella Magi, becoming more so as the dark secrets of the Puella Magi are revealed to her. She is kind, gentle, averse to fighting, and wishes that everyone would get along, sometimes even putting her own life at risk to help others. In previous timelines that Homura had experienced, Madoka had become a Puella Magi, wielding a magic bow and arrow. According to Kyubey, she is capable of becoming the strongest Puella Magi and the most terrible witch, capable of destroying the world, which is why he is most interested in forming a contract with her.

Sayaka Miki
Sayaka Miki (美樹 さやか)
Age: 14

Madoka's classmate who, after helping Madoka rescue Kyubey, ends up getting an offer to become a Puella Magi herself. She cares deeply for her friends, and wants to help an ill boy named Kyousuke Kamijou, whom she has a crush on. Before becoming a Puella Magi, Sayaka wields a baseball bat that Mami can enhance with magic to defend herself with while on witch hunts. She becomes a Puella Magi after using her wish to cure Kyousuke's hand, which was damaged in an accident which robbed him of his ability to play the violin. Sayaka's weapon of choice is a sword. She also has regenerative powers stronger than anyone else due to the nature of her wish. Sayaka hates people who think only of themselves whilst hurting others and is easily provoked into a fight.

After learning how Puella Magi are created, Sayaka starts to descend into despair, as she believes she's now no better than a zombie and thus cannot openly admit her love for Kyousuke. Her state of mind only worsens as one of her two best friends, Hitomi, confesses that she has feelings for Kyousuke too and makes advances on him. At the same time, she also refuses to purify her Soul Gem with Grief Seeds and neglects it to become tainted. At the end of episode 8, her Soul Gem was finally exhausted, and Sayaka turns into the witch Oktavia von Seckendorff. She dies in a battle with Sakura Kyouko, who sacrifices herself in order to not let Sayaka die alone.

In episode 10, it's revealed that during Akemi Homura's third time loop, Sayaka also suffered the same fate of turning into a witch, and was killed by Homura by an explosive.

Kyouko Sakura
Kyouko Sakura (佐倉 杏子)
A rival Puella Magi who comes to the city later in the story. A girl with red-colored long hair and an equally fiery personality to match. Amusingly, she is always seen eating something, even while she is battling.

She comes from a poor church family and used her wish so that people would listen to her father's preachings. However, when her father learned of this, he went mad and killed his entire family. As such, Kyouko decided only to use her magic for herself, since using it for others will only cause despair.

Having grown up in a poor family, she often has to steal food and hates wasting it, a logic she also applies to Grief Seeds, as she only goes after fully grown witches.

Kyouko wields a spear which can extend itself, split into multiple sections, and produce a ball at the end of the chain, which can constrict and hit others at the same time. She seems to be able to change the size of the spearhead as well.

Major Spoiler

After Sayaka turns into a witch, she feels great loss due to the fact that Sayaka was suffering from the same mistake that Kyouko did. Due to Kyuube's double speak, Kyouko believes there might be a possibility of reviving Sayaka's soul gem, so she brings Madoka to Sayaka.

At the end, Sayaka could not be saved, and Kyouko decides to suicide bomb herself using her soul gem. Both Sayaka's witch and Kyouko disappear in the explosion.
Mami Tomoe
Mami Tomoe (巴 マミ)
Age: 15 years

A Puella Magi (Magical Girl) who saves Madoka and Sayaka from a witch in the first episode and explains the whole affair of Puella Magis to them.

She, unlike Homura, wants Madoka and Sayaka to become Puella Magis and acts as their mentor. She has the ability to produce a near-infinite amount of flintlock rifles, can use ribbons to suspend her enemies, and is also able to perform healing magic.

It was revealed that in the past, Mami was involved in a car accident that claimed the lives of her parents and caused her to be severely injured; at the time Kyubey approached her, she was forced to use her wish to save herself. Thus, she feels guilty for forgetting about her parents in that moment of desperation.
Mami does not regret her wish, though, preferring life as a lonely magical girl to death. What she does seem to regret, however, is not having had more time to think it over. She warns Madoka to consider her wish carefully, as Mami herself was not able to do so.

In episode three, not heeding Homura's warning and instead trapping her, Mami battles Charlotte carelessly and is decapitated and subsequently eaten by her while Madoka and Sayaka watch helplessly, an event that weighed heavily on both of them. According to Kyuubey, Mami never knew the truth concerning the Soul Gems.

In one of her time loops to protect Madoka, Homura discloses the truth behind the Soul Gems. After defeating Sayaka's witch form and learning of the truth, Mami loses her sanity. She kills Kyouko and attacks Homura but is stopped by Madoka, who kills Mami. Due to this incident, Homura does not reveal the true nature of the Soul Gems to Mami. This incident also explains why Homura considers Mami to be an unreliable ally.
