Baccano!

Baccano!

Synopsis

During the late 1930s in Chicago, the transcontinental train, Flying Pussyfoot, is starting its legendary journey that will leave a trail of blood all over the country. At the same time in New York, the ambitious scientist Szilard and his unwilling aide Ennis, are looking for missing bottles of the immortality elixir. In addition, a war between the mafia groups is getting worse. On board the Advena Avis, in 1711, alchemists are about to learn the price of immortality.

Based on the award winning light novels of the same name, this anime adaptation follows several events that initially seem unrelated, both in time and place, but are part of a much bigger story - one of alchemy, survival and immortality. Merging these events together are the kindhearted would-be thieves, Isaac and Miria, connecting various people, all of them with their own hidden ambitions and agendas, and creating lifelong bonds and consequences for everyone involved.

Main Character

Ennis

Ennis (エニス)
Szilard's homunculus, although not his first creation. She was created as his subordinate, and is supposed to have no thoughts or emotion when executing his commands; recently, however, she has been gaining more human emotions, as well as independent thought.

Eventually, she helps Firo by giving him the necessary knowledge to destroy Szilard.

Maiza Avaro

Maiza Avaro (マイザー・アヴァーロ)
A Camorra member and one of the original immortals. He was the alchemist who summoned the demon aboard the Advena Avis, and in turn the only one given knowledge of the immortality elixir's recipe. His younger brother, Gerd, was one of the first to be "eaten" for knowledge of the elixir's recipe. Despite being a mafia member, he does not advocate violence, and is rather tenderhearted. Maiza perenially wears a kind expression.

Isaac Dian

Isaac Dian (アイザック・ディアン)
Issac Dian forms one half of the bumbling thief couple, who seem to cross into everybody's story in one way or another. He's in love with Miria, and they've robbed everything and anything, from doors to the entire Genoard household. He's completely clueless, super eccentric and happy-go-lucky to the point you can't stop laughing from his bold and sometimes completely weird actions.

He has a cameo appearance in Durarara!!

Luck Gandor

Luck Gandor (ラック・ガンドール)
Intelligent executive of the Mafia Gandor Family. The third of the brothers and childhood friend of Firo.

Although he and his brothers lead the Gandor family, Luck's close ties with Firo makes the Gandors allies of the Martillo Family. He is always calm and level-headed, preferring to resort to violence only when necessary. When that time approaches, he does not hesitate to eliminate his opponent while still maintaining his calm demeanor.

Since Luck was not a part of the group of Alchemists who sought the immortality elixir in 1711, he is not one of the original immortals. He gains his immortality by accident in 1930, when Issac and Miria mistake the elixir for wine, and shares it with the Gandor brothers and Martillo Family.

Miria Harvent

Miria Harvent (ミリア・ハーヴェント)
Another eccentric thief, she is the partner and lover of Isaac Dian. Miria wholeheartedly believes and supports everything Isaac says, often even going so far as to mimic his body language. She also unintentionally becomes an immortal in 1930. Together they appear extremely stupid, whimsical and oblivious, but they have great affection for the people they meet, whom they always make a big impression on and always believe the best of them.

She has a cameo appearance in Durarara!!

Czesław Meyer

Czesław Meyer (チェスワフ・メイエル)
Czesław is a young child who gained immortality aboard the Advena Avis. Because of the way his guardian, Fermet - who also gained immortality in 1711 - treated him, he is extremely afraid of the other immortals and wants to "eat" them all before they can "eat" him. Despite being around 230 years old in 1931, his mind is very immature as he will never reach puberty, the 'cure-all' elixir eternally deeming his body a child's.

Firo Prochainezo

Firo Prochainezo (フィーロ・プロシェンツォ)
Born between an Italian father and English-American mother, Firo's early childhood was mostly spent in Manhattan's Italian slums. Orphaned at the age of 9, Firo was found by the Martillo Family in the streets one day and stayed with them ever since. Being one of the series' best at knife combats, Firo became an executive staff of the Family at the age of 18. He's also indirectly responsible for the birth of a brand new generation of Immortals in 1930.

Firo is claimed to be the official protagonist of Baccano! by its author despite not being featured at all in some of the books.

Ladd Russo

Ladd Russo (ラッド・ルッソ)
Ladd is a sadistic hit-man for the Russo family. His love for acts of violence truly shows in the maniacal glee he exhibits while fighting or killing. He is exceptionally skilled in hand-to-hand combat--particularly boxing--and the use of firearms. He is most happy while killing people that beg for mercy and by seeing dead people or hearing gunfights. Ladd is deeply in love with his fiancée, Lua, although he expresses it through a passionate promise to kill her someday...

Jacuzzi Splot

Jacuzzi Splot (ジャグジー・スプロット)
A crybaby who is nonetheless capable of exceptional courage and leadership ability when the situation calls for it. At first, Jacuzzi seems almost cripplingly shy, even with a tendency to stutter in front of strangers. However, when his loved ones are in danger, he will summon the strength to face his problems directly, even though he'll continue to cry. After a member of his gang was killed, Jacuzzi robbed a record number of neighborhood stores, clutching a machine gun as tears stream down his face. Jacuzzi went out and received his "sword tattoo" on his face when Nice, his romantic partner, was injured in an explosives accident, so that they would both be similarly marked.

 Claire Stanfield

Claire Stanfield (クレア・スタンフィールド)
The youngest train conductor for the Flying Pussy Foot, he tells Miria and Isaac the story of the dreaded "Rail-Tracer", a story about a brutish beast that causes passengers in a train to disappear one by one. He also seems to be the only one who knows how to stop the Rail Tracer...

It is later revealed he was raised with the Gandor brothers, and is considered part of their family, as well as being the Rail Tracer aforementioned. He works as an assassin under the name of 'Vino'. He proposes to Chane on their first meeting and promises to find her again. He later does so, in the OVA.

Main Character

Mamoru Kagemori

Mamoru Kagemori
Kagemori Mamoru is a dowdy boy whose hair is disheveled and wears thick glasses. He is very lazy except when he's saving Yuna. He wears the glasses as a form of concealment/camouflage. He is actually the son of a ninja family. He reveals his true self (without glasses) when he transforms into a ninja to protect Yuna from harm. He has been friends with Yuna since kindergarten. xxxHOLiC

xxxHOLiC

Synopsis

Watanuki Kimihiro can see spirits and other assorted supernatural creatures, which is quite a bothersome ability he strongly dislikes. On the way home one day, while plagued by some spirits, he is inexplicably compelled to enter a strange house. There, he encounters Yuuko, a mysterious woman who claims to be able to rid him of the ability to see and attract the troublesome creatures – for a price. She demands that he work at her “store” that grants wishes to people, and thus begins Watanuki's adventures through weird and wonderful events.

Shizuka Doumeki
Shizuka Doumeki (百目鬼静)
Shizuka Dômeki is Kimihiro Watanuki's classmate and considered a rival by Watanuki. He is part of the school's kyūdō club and often participates (and tops) school competitions. Also because of his cool and calm composure he is very popular with the girls.

He lives in a shrine owned by his late grandfather, a priest in which during his childhood told him a lot of stories about folklore and shinto practices. However, despite his heritage, Dômeki has a nearly null ability of seeing ghosts or spirits, though he can still exorcise them. He does seem to be able to feel spiritual "pressure" and have a vague sense of their presence. One spirit he did see was the Lady in the Park that Watanuki often visited.

Dômeki has a pure or refreshing scent as noted by the Ame-Warashi. Kohane noted that Doumeki was a 'beautiful' or 'pretty' person, most likely referring to his spirit or aura. Naturally, Watanuki is bewildered (and rather agitated) by this. Dômeki cannot enter Yuuko's Store, the explanation why is later revealed on volume 8. His technique of exorcising spirits is by shooting them with an invisible arrow made of pure energy, as first revealed in volume 2.

Originally Dômeki could not see the spirits/ghosts that Watanuki could see (like that of the oden shop owner and the Ghost Girl who haunted a scary home) but after he shared both his blood and half his eye with Watanuki he was able to eventually see and experience what Watanuki goes through.

Dômeki's personality is a total opposite of Watanuki's. He has a cool, calm and often sarcastic demeanor. He barely speaks unless explaining folklore or asking Watanuki for impossible bento lunches (such as asking for food that is out of season or hard to find). He also has a deadpan sense of humor that is often dark and somewhat fatalistic. Much to the annoyance of Watanuki he seems to pop up everywhere, especially when Watanuki gets a chance to be with Himawari. He often replies in a one word phrase like "Hn" or "Oh". He is also very observant, and even though he does not show it he seems to be very protective of Watanuki, such as in Volume 5 where he stood for hours in the rain to make sure Watanuki was safe and in Volume 6 during the incident with the spirit in the park. Volume 9 of the manga through Dômeki's New Years dream we find out he looks like his late grandfather Haruka. His grandfather also knows more about Dômeki's past, and bears an uncanny resemblance to his grandson (though Watanuki points out that Haruka smiles much more).

Yuuko Ichihara

Yuuko Ichihara (壱原侑子)
Being one extremely experienced in her industry, Yūko is not foolish enough to give away her real name like Watanuki. That aside, Yūko has served as a major catalyst for Watanuki's transformation, acting somewhat as his mentor. She loves to drink and eat Watanuki's wonderful cooking and dragging Watanuki on crazy outings at the drop of a hat.

Despite this immature and free-spirited attitude, Yūko has been known to be sage-like and serious when the time calls for it. Yūko seems to know the true hitsuzen that Watanuki will follow, and has often offered cryptic messages to warn him of impending danger or a folk tale that he should take a bit more seriously. She also seems to truly care about him, making sure he is safe at night, sending the Kudakitsune (pipe-fox) with him for extra protection, or calling Dōmeki when he needs saving.

Yūko is very powerful when it comes to magic and knowledge and is highly respected within the spirit realm. However, she doesn't often appear to get directly involved in things beyond whatever contact she has with those making wishes. Sometimes, she sends Watanuki to do jobs for her, such as when she granted a wish from Himawari. Yūko seems to take the role of someone playing chess when it comes to the big picture of things that are going on.

In Horitsuba Gakuen, she is a ruthless principal, who always climbs into rooms through the window.

Himawari Kunogi

Himawari Kunogi (九軒ひまわり)
Watanuki's main love interest. He has been infatuated with Himawari ever since the beginning of the series and even some cryptic remarks from Yūko like "are you sure she's good luck?" haven't deterred him.

Himawari is caring and kind towards Watanuki, but she has her own reasons in avoiding him becoming closer to her. For some reason she was born with the power to cause serious misfortune (although unintended) to those around her, an issue that even brought death to her grandmother and sometimes brought trouble to her friends.

Kimihiro Watanuki

Kimihiro Watanuki (四月一日君尋)
Watanuki is a high school student whose life has been a rather difficult one — not only have both his parents died, forcing him to live alone, but he is plagued daily by spirits that only he can see (both the ability to see them and the cause of their attacks are evidently heritable traits—apparently Watanuki's blood smells very delicious to spirits).

One day, Watanuki enters into an agreement with Yūko to work for her in exchange for the fulfillment of his wish–to never see spirits again. This marks the beginning of Watanuki's very involved part-time job, a fated meeting with a certain quartet from Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle, and so many "chance" happenings which occur not out of coincidence, but "hitsuzen".

-----
Personality:

Watanuki is known for a having both a volatile and caring nature to him. Depending upon the person he talks to, his emotions tend to be overly exaggerated. With Himawari he throws himself into the air accompanied by hearts and a "Himawari-chaaaaan!!" squeal. With Domeki, he almost always expresses irritation with various facial expressions, screaming, and arm motions that reminds Himawari of an angry cat. With the exception of these two and Yūko, Watanuki tends to address everyone around him with formality and kindness.

One of Watanuki's greater problems, especially early on in the manga, is his lack of self-worth. He found absolutely no value in himself and would often use himself to aid another, even if his life were at stake. An example of this is when he willingly gives up his right eye to the Spider's Grudge to save Domeki's, without considering how much his decision might hurt Domeki. He's forced to face up to this problem when trying to save the Zashiki-Warashi from the Joro-Gumo, when the spider matron harshly chatises him for his lack of consideration for both his own self and those who cared about him. Faced with the facts of how much he's hurt those around him, Watanuki begins to see some value in himself. He will still often use himself to save others, but now he is mindful of just how much his actions hurt other people.

-----
Life for Watanuki changes significantly once he starts working as Yūko's assistant (rather, her very indignant indentured servant) who not only cooks (wonderfully), cleans (diligently), and complains (constantly), but finds himself performing very odd jobs and learning more about the occult.

In later chapters of the manga Yûko allows Watanuki to experience things on his own to contribute to his growth and maturity. This was explained in Volume 8 of the manga, where the change of his character was shown when he saved the Zashiki Warashi from the Spider Queen. This was noticed by other supernatural beings as well.

Watanuki loses sight in his right eye after it was eaten by the Spider Queen/Ruler of Spiders in Volume 8, and Watanuki now shares half of his right's eye vision with Dômeki. Chapter 121's colored first page reveals that his eyes are now heterochromatic with one blue eye and one golden eye - gold being the colour of Doumeki's eyes.

After Yūko's death, Watanuki resolves to stay and care for the shop until he sees her again. In order to both stabilize the shop and break free of Fei Wong Reed's trap with Syaoran, Watanuki offers up the remainder of his 'existence'. As a result, Watanuki can no longer age nor leave the shop. He becomes the new master of the shop and takes up Yūko's role of granting wishes to those who come to the shop.

In chapter 186, we learn that 4 years have passed, and Doumeki is now studying folklore in university, something which Watanuki never ceases to be surprised at. Watanuki appears to have changed- he is seemingly calmer and more matured than before. In this chapter, he is seen lying lazily on Yuuko's chair, smoking away, just like how Yuuko was in the past. But he still cooks- Doumeki buys the ingredients (and his selection meets Watanuki's standards) and goes over (presumably daily, since only he leaves the shop) after studies.

All five swords are in Misuzu's procession right now and she keeps them in her finger nails via dimensional magic that she learnt from forbidden scrolls that was created by one of her ancestor who learnt and incorporated Western magic, Kusakabe Ryoichi.

Later, she develops a crush on Kakeru.

She is also in Kakeru's class in school. In the later part of the story, she discovered that she also has a power that seems to negate others' power. She and Kukuri name the power "Hand of Glory". However, it's merely a misconception on her and other companions in the "Red Night". Later in the game, she was able to remember the true nature of her power and uses it to try to keep Kakeru to herself.

Kakeru Satsuki

Kakeru Satsuki (皐月 駆)
Age: 14-16
Occupation: Student, Waiter
Eye Colour: Blue (Left Eye) and Yellow (Right Eye)
Hair Colour: Navy Blue
Relations: Kukuri (Older Sister - Deceased)
Power: The Eye of Aeon, Visions of the Future
Likes: Minase Yuka

Kakeru is a young student who was born blind in his right eye, therefore wearing an eyepatch to avoid the stares of others as it also a different color. Aside from his best friend, Minase Yuka, Kakeru closed off his heart due to his traumatic background, which included being raised in an orphanage and having his sister commit suicide. Kakeru and Yuka both went to the same orphanage as children. Kakeru also has a job at a cafe.

Kakeru is first shown wanting to protect his best friend Yuka. However when he and Yuka are transported to the Red Night, he is incapable of doing so, thus when Kakeru meets Misuzu, he asks her to train him. One day when Kakeru is about to fight with Misuzu, his right eye begins to hurt and he sees Misuzu attempting to attack Yuka. However when Kakeru moves to intercept, he sees that no-one had moved. Misuzu is shown to have originally planned to attack Yuka. Later on during a fight with Ira, Kakeru awakens his power thanks to Misuzu's teachings. As Ira is about to attack, Kakeru's right eye opens and shows him Ira's movement. Kakeru then dodges Ira with ease and realizing his power was the ability to see the future, easily defeats Ira by slicing him in half. Afterwards, Misuzu offers Kakeru to drink her blood saying that he would gain the power of the Kusakabe Clan if he did so, which he does. Kakeru's abilities are then shown to have dramatically increased as a result of this, to the point of being able to compete with Misuzu.

Kakeru's right eye was called the 'Eye of Aeon', and was formerly owned by the King of Doresvenia, Verard. The Eye of Aeon was difficult to control (as shown by the pain caused to Kakeru when used) so it was also known as the Evil Eye. Later on, Shiori reveals that Liselotte planned to use Kakeru's Eye of Aeon to initiate the HellFall and destroy the world. Shiori also reveals that the Holy Office of the Index believed that Verard would awaken inside the Eye of Aeon, take over his body and attempt to release Liselotte, and that is why the Black Knights wanted to kill him.

When Kakeru and Misuzu are separated from everyone else in the normal world, Kakeru asks if there was anyway for them to defeat Liselotte. Misuzu says there was one way, however it was for two people with Kusakabe blood to be bound together through sex. Misuzu then walks up to Kakeru saying she knows how much he cares for Yuka, but he should think of this as a way of getting stronger to save her. Misuzu then kisses Kakeru saying that before she dies, she wants the one she loves to make her a woman revealing that she loves Kakeru. Misuzu and Kakeru are shown to have sex, with Kakeru thinking it was ceremony and he hadn't betrayed Yuka. Afterwards, Yuka is shown to be OK when she walks out of a crack that appears between the real world and the Red Night. The crack then disappears as Yuka says she loves Kakeru and opens her arms to hug him. However as Kakeru walks over to her, Yuka stabs him clean through the chest with a sword as she is revealed to be possessed by Liselotte. Liselotte then pushes the sword further into Kakeru's chest, killing him.

During episode 12 however, the episode begins at the beginning of the previous episode with Liselotte just about to attack Yuka. However this time, Kakeru see's the future with his Eye but instead of a small vision, he see's the events of the entire 11th episode. Realizing what would happen if he went to protect Yuka, Kakeru stops and Shiori begins to attack Liselotte instead. Liselotte then appears in front of Kakeru and asks him if he still wants to fight even though shes immortal. Kakeru replies that he knew she needed his right eye to initiate the HellFall and that the only way to save everyone was to kill himself. Kakeru then takes Misuzu's sword and stabs himself through the neck to everyones shock and Yuka's despair. Instead of dying however, Kakeru is shown remembering his past and realizing that Yuka had always been there of him. He then wakes up to find Misuzu next to him where she calls Kakeru a fool for trying to kill himself. He then says that he needs to stay alive so he can repay Yuka for everything she'd done for him, saying that he'd repay her by defeating Liselotte.

When talking with Abraxus (in the form of Kukuri) Kakeru is revealed to have been killed by her. Abraxus explains that Kukuri knew about the HellFall, and that her plan was to kill her brother who had the Eye of Aeon, and then kill herself. Shiori then explains that although Abraxus did kill Kakeru, it wasn't the Kakeru who had the Eye of Aeon, as the one who had the Eye existed in Yuka's world, and not Kukuri's. Shiori then says that she believed Kakeru used to live in the world with the Abraxus Kukuri, however Yuka unconsiously used her power and brought him to her world.

When fighting with Liselotte in the final battle, Superbia explains that because Shiori was able to travel between time and space, that if Kakeru combined the Eye of Aeon's power along with the fragment left behind from her death, they may be able to force Liselotte into a space-time rift. When Liselotte prepares to attack Kakeru, a voice comes out telling her to stop which causes Liselotte to stop in shock, saying the voice belongs to Verard. Verard says that he was wrong to want to destroy the world, and that people do care, saying that Kakeru had taught him that. However Liselotte keeps attacking. As Misuzu and Misao launch another attack at Liselotte, she dodges it easily saying it was useless. However Kakeru had seen her dodge in a vision, and appeared behind her. He then holds out Shiori's crystal, and activates it, sucking her into the dimension; however as Liselotte is about to attack Kakeru and escape, Avaritia appears from behind and grabs her; both are sucked into the other dimension.

Kakeru's relationships with the other characters in 11eyes varies. He is very close to Yuka, with their relationship bordering on intimate. He shares a close friendship with Misuzu, shown by the change in which they address each other. With Yukiko, Takahsia and Shiori, Kakeru is good friends with them and with Kukuri, he is skeptical because of her similarity to his sister.

Asch the Bloody is a God General of the Order of Lorelei. He can be arrogant and rebellious, and almost always seems angry.

He has a tremendous amount of pride and cares deeply for his country and the people around him. He is also an extremely talented cook.

Despite his smart and calculating exterior, Asch has moments of incredible goofiness. At one point he masquerades as Luke and is asked (by someone who had met Luke a few days previously) how his hair had changed from short to long in such a short time. Asch's improvised excuse was, "My hair grows fast."

Most of what Asch does is the "behind the scenes" work - though works towards the same goal as Luke and friends.
However, most of the time, he outright refuses to work with them. At the end of the game, he even fought Luke over who would fight Van.

Asch openly despises Luke as the person who replaced him. He hates how Luke considers himself (as the clone) to be the inferior one, as not only is he a copy of Asch (and Asch has a tremendous amount of pride) but he was the one who essentially usurped Asch's life with no effort whatsoever. He also considers them rivals in swordsmanship as they are both pupils of Van.

Although he thinks that Luke is supposed to be his replacement, and thus the same as him, there are many things in the game that say otherwise. Perhaps the most obvious of these is that Luke's hair is light at the ends, and Asch's is darker. Their clothing is also like this, with Luke's white and gold contrasting with Asch's black and silver. Yet another difference between them is that Luke is left handed, and Asch is right handed. Also, as Luke gradually changes throughout the game, Asch always stays the same.

Luke and Asch fought (due to Asch's stubbornness) at the end of the game to settle the issue over who the "real" Luke was. In the end, Luke did win, yet Asch still thought of Luke as his replica. One of his last actions was to take his name back as his own, as a small step in accepting Luke, and acknowledging that he wasn't inferior.

Upon his death, he gave Luke some of his power, allowing Luke to use second-order hyperresonance (and to fully control it at that). It gave Luke the power he needed to finally defeat Sync and Van.

Ion

Ion
Hometown: Keterburg
Age: 14
Weight: 58 kg
Height: 166 cm
Occupation: Fon Master
Weapon: Staff

Fon Master Ion (導師イオン Doushi Ion?) or Ion (イオン Ion?) is the highest leader in the Order of Lorelei, a neutral theocracy currently trying to calm the power struggle between the Malkuth and Kimlasca kingdoms in Tales of the Abyss. He is the only one who can read the Closed Score and unlock Yulia's seals. It is unclear whether the Fon Master is born with this power or it is achieved with the title. He is calm in most situations, and can utilize Daathic Fonic Artes, though that can be exhausting.
Ion joins the party first at Cheagle Woods and on and off throughout the game. Although he is often featured in skits he never fights, presumably because of his weak condition. When Tear and Luke encounter him he nearly faints due to using his powers.

Personality
Ion is an optimistic and soft-spoken figure who tends to pick up on the best aspects of people's characters, even if their negative qualities are overwhelming. Despite being docile and physically weak, Ion is by no means a pushover. He tries his best to be a leader who wants to see peace in the world and exhibits a great deal of maturity. Ion refuses to be a puppet and creates a separate faction to oppose the strictly traditional Grand Maestro Mohs, the second in command of the Order.
Ion is worried about the state of the world and its obsession with the fulfillment of the Score. Unlike most members of the Order, he believes that the Score is but one of many possibilities that can occur.

It turns out that Ion is the seventh replica of the original Fon Master Ion. He was made along with 6 others and chosen because he had the best abilities out the replicas, and the other replicas were thrown alive in the Mount Zaleho volcano, as stated by Sync, another replica of the Fon Master. The original Fon Master Ion was very sick, so Van and Mohs made the replicas, but eventually the original died and the chosen replica became the Fon Master.

7th and final replica of the original Ion.

Ep.23: There's another replica of Ion made.

Guy Cecil

Guy Cecil (ガイ・セシル)
Age: 21
Weight: 79 kg
Height: 184 cm
Occupation: Servant
Weapon: Swords

A servant in Duke Fabre's mansion, also Luke's best friend. Guy's biggest quirk is his fear of women.

Relationship with Luke

Guy is Luke's best friend. Aside from Tear, Guy is usually the one Luke turns to for advice. In the beginning of the game, while Luke treats nearly everyone else with impatience or disdain, he does show a certain degree of respect for Guy. After the events of Akzeriuth, Guy is the only person in the party to willingly go back for Luke after leaving him in Yulia City following his loss of consciousness. Even after everyone else has shunned Luke for his ill treatment and refusal to take responsibility for his actions, Guy chose to believe in him and to help him change.

The two are shown to have a strong bond, and, while they tease each other at times, one will not hesitate to help the other if he is in trouble. Their close friendship also shows in that Luke cannot seem to hide anything from Guy, despite his best efforts to hide that his seventh fonons are deteriorating and that he expects to disappear as a result.

Personality

Guy is a kind and hard-working young man. He is also somewhat a charmer, and he seems to know exactly what to say, often resulting in women swooning over him, much to his dismay. He always seems to want to help those in trouble, regardless of gender, and even saves Anise from falling to her death during an earthquake, despite his gynophobia.

He also seems unable to refuse a request from anyone, and is often told by Emperor Peony to walk his pet rappigs (which he doesn't actually mind doing). When Princess Natalia orderes him to carry something in the Tower of Rem, at which point he was no longer a servant to house Fabre or even a citizen of Kimlasca, he does as she asks simply out of habit. Jade also tells Guy to explain many things to people, and, despite protesting this role, he never actually refuses to do so.

Jade Curtiss

Jade Curtiss (ジェイド・カーティス)
Hometown: Keterburg
Age: 35
Weight: 74 kg / 163 lbs
Height: 186 cm / 6'1"
Weapon: Lances

Dr. Jade Balfour, more commonly known as Jade Curtiss or as Jade the Necromancer is a colonel serving in the Malkuth military and an exceptional wielder of Fonic Arts well known throughout Auldrant. He always seems to be smiling, or at least cheerful, regardless of the events taking place about him, giving little indication of his true thoughts on anything.

Jade is known as the father of Fomicry, the science of extracting data from an existing entity to produce a perfect copy known as a 'replica'. His first attempt was when his sister, Nephry, broke her favorite doll, at which point Jade created a replica to soothe her tears. He was nine at the time.

In his youth, he was, as described by his sister, a "devil" highly adept in casting Fonic Artes; his sister saw him as one who did not understand the significance of life or perhaps that anything but himself could be sentient -- and he, therefore, enjoyed killing monsters through Fonic artes even adults found difficult. Sometime after Luke's conversation with Nephry regarding her brother, Jade confesses to Luke that he still fails to understand what it means for someone to die.

He was, however, significantly changed by his teacher, Dr. Nebilim, a healer who commanded the Seventh Fonon, which Jade could not command himself. Though he had great respect for his teacher, Jade attempted to cast a spell using the seventh fonon, but instead unleashed a power beyond his control that resulted in the death of Nebilim.

As Nebelim lay dying, Jade extracted her data and created a replica of her, though rather than resurrecting his beloved teacher, he only succeeded in creating a monster which he found himself forced to destroy.

At some time after these painful events, Jade's talents in fonic artes and fomicry were recognized, and he was adopted into House Curtiss, a family of high position within the Malkuth military. Jade was eventually convinced to cease his endeavours with Fomicry by his close friend, Emperor Peony the Ninth, who spent his childhood years in Jade's hometown of Keterburg. It is also revealed that Jade forbade the practice of Fomicry on living organisms due to both ethical and technical issues arising from the subject.

Dist (also one of Nebilim's students), however, still didn't accept Nebilim's death. His dream was to see Jade return to normal, and help him resurrect her again. However, Jade had always refused, and often opted to make fun of Dist instead.

He introduces himself as "Colonel Jade Curtiss, Third Division, Malkuth Imperial Forces." He doesn't ever refer to himself as Jade the Necromancer (his given nickname that arose due to his habit of scavenging corpses after a battle), but acknowledges others when they call him the Necromancer.

Personality
Jade is at first mostly an enigma, his teasing smile always hiding his true thoughts. Often, when the actions of those around him are less than thought through, Jade uses sarcasm to show that he disapproves. Other than amusement, Jade rarely shows signs of any emotions at all, though occasionally they get out of his control. Deep inside, Jade feels guilty for all the people he has killed, especially Professor Neblim.

Abilities
Jade could be considered the strongest character in Tales of the Abyss, given all of his powerful Fonic artes. When Luke first encounters him, Jade is Level 45, with artes like Blessed Drops and Ground Dasher. Largo the Black Lion (a God-General), however, uses a fon slot seal to seal Jade's Fonic artes. Jade's Level is immediately dropped to 5 and he loses all his artes except Energy Blast and Sonic Spear. His increases in level, therefore, actually represent how much of the fon slot seal he has undone.

Through leveling up, Jade gains one high-tier Fonic arte for each element but light and darkness: the aforementioned Blessed Drops and Ground Dasher and Thunder Blade and Infernal Prison. Through sidequests, however, Jade can also learn Absolute, Prism Sword, and Meteor Storm. Also, each of Jade's high-tier Fonic artes invokes a fully charged Field of Fonons of its element after it is used. Each of Jade's four Strike artes--Sonic Spear, Thunder Lance, Impaling Heaven, and Soveregn Gale--is changed by a different element of FoF, meaning that Jade can use any fully charged FoF to change a Strike arte.

Tear Grants

Tear Grants (ティア・グランツ)
Hometown: Yulia City
Age: 16
Weight: 50 kg
Height: 162 cm
Occupation: Order of Lorelei, Military Wing
Weapon: Staves

The Fende family was originally from the Island of Hod which was destroyed in the Hod War that left a large portion of the continent devastated by its effects. The island fell into the Qliphoth, taking both Tear's mother who was pregnant with her at the time and Van, her older brother, into the miasma-filled world under Auldrant's crust.

Raised by Van, the Commandant of the God-Generals, and her adopted grandfather, Mayor Teodoro of Yulia City. She quickly joined the Order of Lorelei when she was of age. She is a Locrian Sergeant in the Oracle Knights Intelligence Division, a section of the Oracle of Lorelei that presides over the Score.

Tear's detached demeanor came from her mentor, Legretta the Quick, Van's assistant and one of the Six God-Generals. To this day Tear considers Legretta the reason why she became so cold, concise and calculating - that and wanting Van's approval.

It has been said that Tear and her family are the descendents of Yulia, the original fonist who discovered the Seventh Fonon and as a result, Tear is able to use it. However, unlike those that are able to use the Seventh Fonon, she is currently the only one to date save for Yulia that is able to use the Grand Fonic Hymn, a compilation of seven Fonic hymns, that provide its recipient with increased statistics which makes them more or less invincible for a time.

At the start of the anime, Tear discovers that Van is determined to destroy the main world, and takes an assignment from Grand Maestro Mohs to locate the Seventh Fonstone in order to get to the Outer Lands. Along the way, she crosses through a portal and breaks into the Fabre manor where she finds Van, feigning as young Luke Fon Fabre's swordmaster and mentor, and proceeds to attack him but Luke steps in the way, blocking her assault. Without either Tear or Luke knowing that he possesses the power of the Seventh Fonon, a hyperresonance occurs between them and sends the two into the Malkuth Empire.

Once realizing that they're no longer in Baticul, Tear promises to get Luke back home and they set out not knowing that they are in enemy territory. Just as they make it out of Tataroo Valley and hitch a ride on a passing wagon, they see a Colonel Jade Curtiss' dreadnaught (whom they do not know at the time) chasing another coach across toward the Rotelo Bridge. The coach tosses out some explosive barrels which destroys their quickest way out, forcing Tear and Luke to take shelter in a nearby town known as Engeve, the main farming town of the Malkuth Empire. Once they pass the threshold of the city they find themselves drawn deeper into the plot that threatens to leave Auldrant in its wake.

Personality & Interests
Despite a usually cold demeanor, Tear actually loves anything cute and/or fluffy including Mieu, the bearer of the Sorcerer's Ring. Even in Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology, she thought Eugene Gallardo and Mormo were cute (much to their respective dismays).

She is modest about her own body and avoids revealing too much whenever possible. For instance when the Malkuth emperor, Peony IX, gives her a bikini that is too risque for her, she opts out for a rented one piece with a garter belt for her throwing daggers thus giving her the title Rental Beauty. She also gets angry when her body becomes a subject of jokes, for instance, in a skit where Anise Tatlin says she dreams of having grown-up body as well developed as Tear's, Luke blurts out that there's no way Anise could develop "melons" (breasts) as big as hers, and Tear gets embarrassed and immediately scolds the two, forgetting their current situation. Tear is also afraid of ghosts. For example, when the party was traveling in the mountains Jade remember the story of a ghost of the mountains and Tear walks away while trying to rushing th others but Luke asked if she was scared she immediately denies while blushing; causing them to laugh at her much to her chagrin.

Along with her interests is her romantic interest. Throughout the game, Tear develops feeling for the game's protagonist, Luke fon Fabre. The two have been together since the beginning of the game. Tear has shown that she has a soft spot for the red head when she taught him how to control his hyperressonance, and she has been the character that explains many things to Luke. She is the only one to stay behind with Luke in Yulia City when he is unconscious. Everyone in the group seems to notice Tear's feeling for Luke, except Luke himself. There have been many hints from the others to Luke that Tear likes him, but all of them seem to fly over Luke's head. The duo has been made fun of by the others in the group. There is a skit when the two are arguing, and Guy Cecil and Anise Tatlin tell the two to break up their "lover's quarrel," which they respond by blushing while they immediately deny it. In a scene in Nam Cobanda Isle, when the group meets another Ant Lion Man, the player is given a choice to say which character is most important to Luke. If the player picks Tear, Tear disappears and Luke starts to panic. When he meets up with her, Luke admits that he was worried about her. Tear blushes and asks if he really was which leads to Luke making up an excuse about why he was worried. This leads to Tear’s disappointment, and Luke calling himself an idiot. Yet, Luke does try to return the feelings. The night before the group’s final battle, Luke seems to attempt to tell Tear something important, but, in the end, is too nervous to say it. They both supported each other when the other was risking their life to save the world. Tear, however, was extremely upset when Luke decided that he would sacrifice himself the rid Auldrant of the miasma. At the very end of the game, after the battle with Van, each member of the party says something to Luke. Tear’s speech is begging Luke to come back after everything is over, and she ends her speech by whispering ‘I love you’ which Luke cannot hear.

Natalia Luzu Kimlasca Lanvaldear

Natalia Luzu Kimlasca Lanvaldear (ナタリア・ルズ・キムラスカ・ランバルディア)
Hometown: Baticul
Age: 18
Weight: 53 kg
Height: 168 cm
Occupation: Princess of Kimlasca
Weapon: Bow

Natalia is the princess of Kimlasca. She is engaged to Luke and has been ever since the two were children, although with Luke's memory loss he doesn't remember making a promise with Natalia, thus isn't very keen on the idea of marrying her. However, Natalia is very attached to him, and she continues to hope that Luke will remember their promise someday. Natalia is a trained archer and healer, both of which she excells at. Her main quirks are her terrible cooking and gullibility.

Personality
Although at first Natalia seems demanding and somewhat harsh, she cares deeply for her kingdom and her people, and is strongly devoted to them. Her promise with Asch to change her country so that "no one has to be poor" and that "war never happens" is just one example of her love for Kimlasca. She was sometimes among her people as well, rather than just hearing about them in her castle.
It is obvious that the people of Kimlasca love her very much in return. When Natalia and Luke are declared impostors and sentenced to death, the civilians aid their escape by standing in the way of their pursuers, putting their lives on the line. To the people of Baticul, all that mattered was that their dear princess, of royal blood or not, was safe.

Natalia is a strong leader and a passionate humanitarian. After the events of the Absorption Gate, she travels Auldrant to make sure the peace is kept between Malkuth and Kimlasca, and to help cities in need. For six months, she is hard at work trying to make Auldrant a better place.

During the party's trip to Mt. Roneal, it is shown that Natalia is rather fond of ghost stories, and was ecstatic at the chance to hear one from Jade Curtiss. Tear Grants did not share her excitement, and quickly cut Jade off.

It is later revealed that Largo is her real father. In episode 13, it is also revealed that her real name given by her parents is Meryl.

Anise Tatlin

Anise Tatlin (アニス・タトリン)
Anise is a Fon Master Guardian from Daath. Her duty is to protect the Fon Master, Ion at all times.

Anise is good at deceiving others, especially Natalia, and she is also rather greedy with an intense love of money.

The stuffed doll, Tokunaga, that she keeps strapped to her back can grow to gargantuan size, and she fights while riding on its back. She hopes to marry rich, and ever since meeting Luke she has been plotting to become his future duchess.
