Mermaid Melody: Pichi Pichi Pitch

Synopsis As the mermaid princess of the North Pacific (one of the seven mermaid kingdoms), Lucia entrusts a magical pearl to a boy who falls overboard a ship one night. Lucia must travel to the human world to reclaim her pearl and protect the mermaid kingdoms. Using the power of music Lucia is able to protect herself and the mermaid kingdoms from a growing evil force.

Main Character

Kaito Domoto (堂本 海斗)

Kaito, the son of a pair of musicians, is an avid surfer, as well as Lucia's love interest. Though he is popular with girls, he is secretly in love with a beautiful mermaid who saved him from a shipwreck seven years ago, and has yet to realize that this mermaid is Lucia. Later in the story, it is discovered that beneath Kaito's human exterior lie some distinctively un-human qualities.

Hanon Houshou (宝生 波音)

Hanon is the Mermaid Princess of the South Atlantic Ocean, and the keeper of the Aqua Pearl. She is the second mermaid to appear in the first season and becomes best friends with Lucia. Hanon is part of the main trio with Lucia and Rina throughout the whole series, and is there during the battles versus Gaito and Michel.

In the first season, Hanon had a crush on the music teacher, Mitsuki Tarou (Tarou-chan was her pet name for him), until she found out that Mitsuki had a relationship with Sara. In Pure, Mitsuki left for Germany, and Hanon ended up falling in love with a classmate, Shiroi Nagisa. Hanon and Nagisa are now a couple.

Hanon has three different forms: Mermaid Hanon, Houshou Hanon (Human Form), and her singer form, Aqua Pearl Voice. She has two image songs, Ever Blue and Mizuiro no Senritsu.

Lucia Nanami (七海るちあ)

Mermaid Princess of the North Pacific Ocean, keeper of the pink pearl, and the main character of the story. Lucia goes up to land to search for a boy she saved seven years ago. She is unaware of the danger in the marine world and of her real mission until she is told of them by her "older sister", Nikora. She is characterized by her simplicity and naïveté, but with having a strong will, typical traits of shōjo manga heroines. Her idol form is Pink Pearl Voice. Of all the mermaids in the series, Lucia's mermaid form and human form contrast the most (Lucia has dark blonde hair and brown eyes in the surface while having lighter blonde hair and light blue eyes while at sea).

Some fans in the West still spell her name as Luchia, due to a misunderstanding of the spelling systems of different languages. The Italian name Lucia follows Italian spelling rules, which say that "c" is pronounced as a post-alveolar affricate (the same sound that is written as "ch" in English) when it appears before a front vowel (in this case, "i"). That pronunciation is correctly represented in Japanese kana as るちあ. When attempting to transliterate the kana back into Latin characters, some people, unaware of the Italian spelling of the name, tried using the English "ch" to represent that consonant, resulting in the incorrect spelling "Luchia".

Rina Touin (洞院 リナ)

Rina is the Mermaid Princess of the North Atlantic Ocean, and keeper of the Green Pearl. She is the third Mermaid to appear in the series. She is part of the main trio with Lucia and Hanon, and so she is present throughout the series.

When her kingdom was attacked by Gaito, Rina had escaped with another Mermaid Princess, Noel. The two were in search of the other Mermaids, but Gaito and Yuuri appeared. Their attack was meant to hit both, but Noel took the attacks in order to save Rina. Since then, Rina went to the human world to avenge Noel by finding Gaito.

Rina then transferred to the same school Lucia and Hanon went to, only she chose to wear the male school uniform. At first, she seemed to hate Kaito, because he looked just like Gaito, but she didn't know. She was found out by Lucia and Hanon, and now the three became friends.

Rina has no love interest in the first season, but in Pure, she meets Hamasaki Masahiro. The two end up falling in love.

Rina has three different forms, Mermaid Rina, Touin Rina (her human form), and her idol form, Green Pearl Voice. Her two image songs are Star Jewel and Piece of Love.

Noel (ノエル)

Noel is the Mermaid Princess of the Arctic Ocean, and the keeper of the Deep Blue Pearl. She was captured by Gaito, and so she only appeared near the end of the first season. Lucia and Co. had come to face Gaito and liberate everyone. Noel was freed and reunited with her younger sister, Caren.

When Gaito was defeated, Noel leaves to help rebuild her kingdom. She comes back to the human world with Caren and Coco, but they are only comic relief. Noel returns a second time when the Mermaids fight Michel.

Noel is portrayed as the smart and quiet type. She is involved in most of the second trio's crazy things, such as flirting with Nagisa and Masahiro to get Hanon and Rina jealous. In Ep. 18 of Pure, she whips out glasses and is helpful to finding the theory of Miracle Bay. Noel is not the one who makes a decision without thinking, but she is willing to sacrifice herself if it means saving her friends.

Noel has three different forms: Mermaid Noel, Human Noel, and her singer form, Deep Blue Pearl Voice. She has no image song.

Caren (かれん)

Caren is the Mermaid Princess of the Antarctic Ocean, and the keeper of the Purple Pearl. She is the fourth Mermaid to appear in the series.

Like Hanon and Rina, Caren also escaped to the human world when Gaito attacked her kingdom. However, even though she is found out by the trio, she refuses to join them. Initially, she shows hatred for Rina. Why? KCaren is the younger sister of Noel, who was captured by Gackto. She heard how Rina was with Noel at that time, and was told that Rina left Noel behind. (In reality, Noel sacrificed herself to save Rina.) Karen, therefore, resolves to save Noel on her own.

Eventually, Karen saves the trio on various occasions, especially when the Black Beauty Sisters are introduced. Near the end of the first season, Karen sides with the trio as they are about to face the final battle against Gaito.

After the defeat of Gaito, Caren leaves to help rebuild her kingdom. She returns to the human world with Noel and Coco, and they end up becoming comic relief. Caren also returns for the battle against Michel.

At first, Caren is strict, and even a bit mean, but she starts to warm up to the trio and shows her playful side a bit. In Pure, Caren is energetic and playful, unlike in the manga, Caren's personality was not fully revealed.

Caren has three different forms: Mermaid Karen, Human Karen, and her singer form, Purple Pearl Voice. Her image song is Aurora no Kaze ni Notte.

Coco (ココ)

Mermaid Princess of the South Pacific Ocean and keeper of the yellow pearl. She is incarcerated by the sea monsters for most of the first season, so not much is known about her. In the manga, however, she is a friend of fellow Mermaid Princess Sara. Later, she found to be playful and gentle in the manga, yet brash and outspoken in the anime. Her idol form is Yellow Pearl Voice.
