H2O: Footprints in the Sand

Synopsis Takuma Hirose is a blind young male high school student, though the cause for his blindness is undetermined. In order to heal his medical condition, he is sent to live in a village with his uncle. There, he meets several girls, three of which stand out more than any of the others. They are Hayami Kohinata, Hinata Kangura, and Otoha. Otoha temporarily heals his blindness and Hirose uses his sight to help others. He finds out that, for some reason, Hayami Kohinata is hated in the village, and he tries his best to help her out. Meanwhile, many sad secrets unfold in the village...

Main Character

Otoha (音羽)

Otoha appears to be a normal girl, but she is in fact a ghost, and only Takuma can hear or see her. She is always cheerful, and will appear out of no where, clinging suddenly to Takuma. She refers to herself with the masculine pronoun boku, meaning "I". She refers to Takuma as the "Promised Person".



It is later known in the anime that she is the actual Kagura Hinata.

Takuma Hirose (弘瀬琢磨)

Takuma Hirose, a blind young male high school student, though the cause for his blindness is undetermined. After his mother died an unexpected death, it left a deep emotional scar on him, which caused him to become very lonely and reserved. Due to this, Takuma and his father move from the city out into a rural area and Takuma is enrolled into a new high school. At his new school, he meets several new girls, though three of whom he gets to know the most out of anyone else. 

Hinata Kagura (神楽 ひなた)

Birthday: November 1

Hinata is the granddaughter of the village headman, and is one of the rich members of town. She is in Takuma's class and is the council president for her class. She has a kind of obliging personality, and is popular in her school. She tends to fall down and be clumsy, and once she even fell down a flight of stairs at school, though luckily Takuma was there to break her fall. She refers to Takuma as "Hirose-sama", a very polite form of expression. 

Her real name is actually Hotaru Kagura, the younger sister to Hinata — known as Otoha by Takuma. When Hinata drowned, her grandfather forced Hotaru to become Hinata, and made the village people think that it was Hotaru that drowned.

Hayami Kohinata (小日向 はやみ)

Birthday: December 25

Hayami is a social outcast because of what happened to her family. She once belonged to a prestigious family until the town rioted and burned down their mansion. She was then forced to live in an abandoned bus with very few belongings.

Despite being very strong, Hayami refuses to fight back when she is getting beat up. Because her family was prestigious and greedy, the village hated her family for it, and the hatred also stuck with her even long after her family was killed and her house was burned down. Hayami used to be great friends with Hinata (the daughter of a town noble), until Hinata's grandfather stepped in and stopped the relationship out of revenge.

With all of her friends, family and belongings gone, she lives a tough life full of anger and resentment towards the town folk. But surprisingly when Takuma begins to be very persistent about involving her in everything, she turns out to be a normal girl, just like all the others, with feelings, hopes and a strong desire for happiness. Including her love for swimming alone and her extreme fear of spiders.
