Yuri, the leader of the Shinda Sekai Sensen or SSS, the rebellious faction against the god who destined her to have an unreasonable life. She is one of the two main protagonist of the anime. She has a strong personality. She is the main rival of Angel.

She meets Hinata before Angel discovered him to be turned into an NPC and she managed to convince him to form the SSS a.k.a. Shinda Sekai Sensen with her. It is later revealed that when she was alive she had three siblings, whom she tried to protect as an elder sister, that died during a burglary in her house. It has not been revealed how exactly she died, though it is strongly implied it was via a gun.

Yuzuru Otonashi

Yuzuru Otonashi (音無結弦)
Height: 176 cm
Age: 17

Otonashi lost his memory in an accident and thus thinks his life has no meaning. Things start to change for him as the story progresses. He is the main male protagonist of Angel Beats!
Armaments
Glock 19

In episode 7, Naoi is asked by Yuri to hypnotize him so he can regain his memories. This turns out successful revealing he had a very ill younger sister who was his sole reason for living. After her death, Otonashi decides to become a doctor to cure others who are ill like his sister and starts to study frantically. On his way to take an exam, his train crashes because of a snow storm. This hints that he died at that moment.
However in episode 9, it is shown he survives the crash and starts helping the other few survivors as much as he can, since he was studying medicine. He and the survivors are stuck in a dark tunnel and it is only after 7 days that a rescue team arrives. A few minutes before losing all hope, Otonashi signs a paper to donate his organs (and inspires the other survivors to do the same). Otonashi dies soon after, just seconds before the rescue team arrived.

Over the course of the anime, he is the first of the SSS to try and understand Tenshi (Kanade). In the final episode, he confesses his love to her. However, it is revealed that Kanade's reason for coming to that world was she was unable to thank the person who let her live on - the person that donated their heart for a heart transplant.

Kanade reveals that she knew it was Otonashi all along, stating that she realized he did not have a heart in the very first episode when she stabbed him.

They embrace in Kanade's final moments, and she disappears from the world. Otonashi, overwhelmed by grief, screams out her name.

Soon, he disappears from the world as well.

In the last moments of the final episode, an Otonashi-like figure is walking through a city street. He passes by a figure resembling Kanade, who is humming "My Song" (the final song that Iwasawa sings before she disappears). As he walks by, he suddenly stops upon hearing it.

He turns around and walks after her, then runs and reaches out to touch her shoulder. The scene then fades to white, and the anime concludes.

In "another epilogue" Otonashi is seen to have remained as the new student president. He faces another soul and inspires him to face up to their past. Though the episode is ambiguous, it is clear Otonashi had decided to remain behind the Purgatory whereas everyone has already left, as he stated in his final Dialogue with Kanade.

Kanade Tachibana

Kanade Tachibana (立華かなで (天使))
Height: 160 cm
Weight: 45 kg
Age: 16 (Before Death)

Favorite Food: Mapo Tofu

Tenshi has a variety of self-defense skills at her disposal, which she calls "Guard Skills".

Hand Sonic: Calls forth a blade on one hand or both. The blades are capable of slicing through steel. Kanade has shown several variations to its form:
  • Version 1: Regular shape, resembling a longsword.
  • Version 2: A longer version than the previous, with a curved diamond shape on its tip.
  • Version 3: Shaped like a traditional sai.
  • Version 4: A variation which is shaped like a lotus flower with no edges other than, perhaps, its petals. Apparently more of a bludgeoning weapon than a slicing one. Tenshi admits to have created it in her attempt to make her weapon "cuter".
  • Version 5:Kanade's most recent variation of Hand Sonic. Is basically a pair of pincers secured on the arm by a blue gauntlet-like accessory. She created this version out of Otonashi's advice to make a more ruthless image.
Distortion: Distorts the path of bullets or any other projectiles around or away from her body.

Delay: Creates a sort of after-image for close range. It is effective in dodging melee attacks by confusing the enemy into attacking elsewhere.

Harmonics: Makes a clone of herself which is identical to her except the clone has blood-red eyes. Clones created through this ability have their own consciousness and have all the abilities of the original - including Harmonics itself. This ability is apparently sightly glitched, as her clones were shown to rebel against her to the extent of almost killing her.

Absorb: A "hidden ability" which acts as the reverse of Harmonics. It allows the reintegration of clones created through Harmonics into the original's body. This, however, poses some risks as Harmonics clones also possess their own consciousness. This ability is connected to Harmonics using a command called timewait, which is simply a wait command which delays the execution of this ability. This command was created by Yuri as method of dealing with the Harmonics clones.

Overdrive: A passive ability that gives her superhuman strength.

Howling: Emits powerful high-frequency, high-amplitude sound-waves from crossed Hand Sonic blades, meant to make an enemy faint. Created by one of the Harmonics clones.

Angel Wings: Sprouts wings from her back that can be used to slow descent and let her survive drops such as jumping from the roof of a building. Purely decorational, as she could survive the drop easily to begin with.

Energy Blast: This unnamed technique produces a blue explosion that is shot out of her back in a vaguely angel wing-shaped blast. It was stated to be as powerful as a bomb by Naoi, after it demolished a mass of Shadows.

Tenshi is the nickname the SSS gives her based on Yuri's belief that she must be a representative of god. Tenshi is one of the two main female characters of the anime. Her name means 'Angel', though she has stated she isn't one. The main plot of the anime revolves around her rivalry with Yuri, as Tenshi is believed to be the enemy of the Afterlife.

She never admits her name as 'Angel' instead she is the Student Council President of the school, who oversees the process of the afterlife.

In Episode 3, the SSS breaks into her room and discovers that she is developing her Guard Skills in a similar manner to that of the SSS. This forces Yuri to contemplate the possibility of there being no God and Tenshi being an ordinary human.

In Episode 5, due to the SSS sabotaging her tests, she is demoted from the position of Student Council President. Her name, Kanade, as described by Otonashi, literary means 'Playing Music'.

In Episode 6, Otonashi claims that he could have been her friend if they had met one another in a different manner. Kanade, however, says that there could be no such person, and if there was, they would soon disappear, since anyone who befriends her would end up living an ordinary school life and eventually vanish. Thus, she is forced to be alone.

In Episode 7, Tachibana is invited to join the battlefront for fishing. There, she manages to capture the monster of the lake with the help of the battlefront, and she also saves them in the process. The group then cooks the fish and serves it to the student body. Otonashi asks Tachibana if he can call her by her first name, and she eventually agrees, and also starts calling him "Yuzuru", his first name, like requested. At the end of the episode, Yuri arrives in a bad condition, and claims that Tenshi was the reason for her wounds. However, Otonashi says that Kanade was with them the whole time. Yuri then points to a shadowy figure on top of a building, and we see another Tenshi with red eyes.

In episode 8, the other Tachibana starts attacking the Battlefront, so the original Tachibana Kanade attacks her, and both are hurt. Later on, Tachibana is placed in the infirmary and Yuri, along with Naoi, explain that Tenshi might have used the ability "Harmonics", and this caused her to copy herself into an aggressive Tenshi. So, Yuri hacks into Kanade's computer and adds the timewait skill, making it that whenever Kanade duplicates herself with the harmonics skill, the absorb skill will activate, and the copy will return to the original after 10 seconds. However, when Yuri, along with the other battlefront members, return to Kanade in the infirmary, Kanade had disappeared, leaving a mess. The theory that they had was either Yuri messed up the system and caused Tachibana to have a personality change, or somebody kidnapped her. After acquiring more information about her whereabouts, the battlefront discover that she is hiding deep within the end of Guild (the one that was destroyed in episode 2). The battlefront finds out that the harmonic copied another one, and the other one copied yet another one, and so on. This caused having around 10 - 20 aggressive Tenshi that attack the battlefront. The members sacrifice themselves for each Tenshi so that the other members can pass through, since there is no way to destroy these harmonics without ammo, which they didn't have. Finally, Yuri battles the last harmonic which uses a new skill known as "Howling". Luckily, Yuri had ear plugs and attacked the final harmonic Tenshi, and so it was defeated. Otonashi found Kanade and told her to use the Harmonics ability so that all the other Harmonics can return to her after 10 seconds. However, after she used the ability and another harmonic appeared, the harmonic stated that Kanade will suffer greatly since all of the harmonics (99 harmonics clones) will be absorbed by her. After 10 seconds, all the harmonics disappear and return to Kanade, and Tachibana could not handle it, so she started shouting and screaming for help.

In episode 13, it is revealed that Kanade is, in fact, the person who received the donor heart of Otonashi from when he died. Her regret in life was her inability to thank the one who gave her the heart.

After the credits, there is a short scene featuring what is assumed to be her and Otonashi possibly reuniting in the real world.
